UN Climate Conference in Bonn

Stop the greenwashing of the genocide against the Armenians!

The Central Council of the Armenians in Germany (Zentralrat der Armenier in Deutschland, ZAD), the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP), the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR), and the “Arbeitsgruppe Anerkennung – Gegen Genozid, für Völkerverständigung” have sent an urgent appeal to the German Federal Government and all delegates of the COP29, asking them to advocate for the immediate release of all Armenian prisoners in Baku in the run-up to the climate conference. The meeting of the subsidiary bodies of the Bonn-based United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC SB60) started on June 3, 2024. The UN Climate Conference COP29 will take place in Azerbaijan in November 2024.

“In the scope of a climate conference that is dedicated to peace, your silence helps to cover up a genocide. We are appealing to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, to German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, to all members of the Bundestag, and to the delegates to COP29 to publicly condemn the crimes of the Azerbaijani government. “We would like to remind you of the fact that a genocide lawsuit was filed against dictator Ilham Aliyev at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on April 18, 2024.”

We are demanding the German Federal Government to use the Climate Conference in Bonn to

  • condemn the genocide against the Armenians (nine-months-long hunger blockade, expulsion) in 2023 and President Ilham Aliyev’s denial of the crimes,
  • and demand Azerbaijan to release all Armenian prisoners currently detained in Baku!
