Release Maschal Tamo and Mustafa Ismail From Prison!

Syria: Free Kurdish Human Rights Activists!

The Kurdish Syrian human rights activist Maschal Tamo and Mustafa Imail are free! The Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) learned on Friday that both have been released from Prison.

Maschal Tamo was kidnapped by a patrol of the secret service in the night of August 14 2008 in the 'Ayn al-'Arab city in northern Syria. For weeks, his family members where denied information on his whereabouts. The Syrian authorities shared the location where the activist was imprisoned after the STP asked for support from the embassies of the democratic countries in Damascus. Shortly afterwards, he was brought to court and sentenced to three and a half years in prison for alleged "Weakening of the nation spirit"

The lawyer Mustafa Ismail had to spend almost a year and a half in prison after he was arrested by Security forces in the city of Aleppo in northern Syria. The human rights activist personally thanked the STP and all other instititutions that had campaigned for his liberation by phone on Friday.
