Invitation: Solidarity event in Berlin (June 6)

Freedom for Oleg Orlow!

On the eve of the appeal proceedings in the case against Russian human rights activist Oleg Orlov, the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) and Memorial Germany are organizing a protest event in front of the Russian embassy in Berlin. You are cordially invited:

Thursday, June 6, 2024,

starting at 6 pm

Unter den Linden 63–65, Berlin

Oleg Orlov was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for protesting against the war and for criticizing the Russian government. The appeals proceedings will begin on June 7. “Ever since the verdict was reached, on February 27, Oleg Orlov has been harassed in pre-trial detention. Contact with his lawyers is restricted, he is moved overnight without notice, and phone calls with his wife are prevented. This harassment must be stopped immediately,” demanded STP expert Nora Erdmann. “The trial is an unjust procedure. Orlov must be acquitted on all counts – unconditionally,” Erdmann emphasized.

Contrary to custom, Orlov was transferred from Moscow before the final judgment, during the ongoing proceedings. Finally, he was taken to Sysran, about 800 kilometers away from Moscow. He has to join the hearings via video conference. Orlov is the co-founder of the Russian human rights organization Memorial, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
