Should Turkish police patrol Germany?

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is planning to employ police officers from guest countries in the scope of the European Football Championship 2024 in Germany. “This could result in Turkish police forces patrolling German streets,” warned Dr. Kamal Sido, Middle East Consultant of the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP), six months before the opening match. “These police forces, which belong to an Islamist regime, are actively involved in the violent oppression of minority groups in Turkey. Many of those who could be affected were forced to flee to Germany precisely to escape these police forces.” Thus, it would be absolutely irresponsible to let Turkish police officers patrol German streets.

So far, the Ministry of the Interior has not yet published any details on the plans – so it is still unclear whether police officers from guest countries are supposed to be allowed to carry weapons. Also, Faeser has not yet specified from which countries the police officers will be recruited. “In any case, the ministry must carefully and individually assess whether those who are supposed to exercise the monopoly of force in the country have an extremist mindset,” Sido demanded. “Under no circumstances should uniformed personnel who reject democracy, human rights, or equal rights be given responsibility for the safety of the people here.”
