Invitation: Panel at Cafe Kyiv (February 19)

In the course of this year’s edition of Cafe Kyiv – organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation – the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) and the Central Council of the German Sinti and Roma will hold the panel Respect, Recognition, and Rights of National Minorities and Indigenous Peoples in Ukraine: Roma, North Azovian Greeks and Crimean Tatars. On the invitation of the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) and the Central Council of the German Sinti and Roma, three representatives of the approximately 100 minority groups and indigenous peoples of Ukraine will speak about their current situation. Natali Tomenko will speak for the Agency for the Advocacy of Roma Culture (ARCA), representing around 400,000 Roma in Ukraine. The Urum and the Rumei are the two subgroups of North Azov Greeks, who have been living along the coast of the Sea of Azov for centuries. They once founded the city of Mariupol, which has meanwhile largely been destroyed in the course of the Russian attack. They have been affected by the war since 2014

Olga Tsuprykova – who, as a representative of the North Azov Greeks, was forced to flee to Kyiv – will describe her situation. Crimean Tatar Elnara Nuriieva-Letova will represent the indigenous Crimean Tatar people on the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula, where Crimean Tatars are systematically persecuted. An above-average number of them are in Russian custody. Many members of minority groups are fighting side by side with the Ukrainian people. They are suffering from the war and its consequences, and they are sometimes also subjected to prejudice and misunderstanding. Their voices must be heard – also in the reconstruction process in Ukraine.
