“With André Glucksmann, the victims of genocide in Bosnia and Chechnya have lost an astute advocate,” said Tilman Zülch, Secretary General of the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP), in Göttingen on Tuesday. “We mourn the French philosopher, who also encouraged human rights activists like us.”

Zülch recalled that, at an early stage of the war in Bosnia, Glucksmann had said that Europe was partly responsible for the genocide against the Bosnians because of the indifference concerning the war crimes of the Serb troops. Further, he clearly condemned threats by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, who, in 1999, told the Chechen civilians they could either leave Grozny, the capital city, or lose their lives: He compared Putin’s ultimatum to Grozny with Hitler’s ultimatum to Warsaw and Pol Pot’s ultimatum to Phnom Pen.
