This short guide provides an overview of some of the most relevant cases of autonomy in Europe and South Asia. It sheds light on current developments in autonomous regions, as well as to explore the likelihood of implementing autonomy in societies affected by ethnic conflict. In order to create a common foundation of terminology and fundamental criteria, the publication is introduced with an overview of the general concept of political autonomy, which clarifies fundamental criteria and minimum standards for "genuine political autonomy”. The text is completed by a broad range of information on autonomies and ethnic minorities.
